Concrete that heals itself
05 August 2011
There’s a concrete that heals itself, which was developed by Dutch biologist Dr. Henk Jonkers from Delft University - and we’ve got a sample in the Materials Library.
Here’s how it works: the material is comprised of a self-healing agent that can lie dormant for centuries. When a crack occurs in the concrete, the water which seeps through activates these agents to biologically produce limestone. The concrete thus heals in the same way our bones heal themselves.
The Materials Library (at the heart of the Institute of Making) will open its doors in the Somerset House in early 2012. Join our mailing list and be the first to be notified when we're ready to take visitors.
