Next public Open day: Metal 7th March
30 January 2015
The Institue of Making is turning 2, come and celebrate our birthday with us!
This March we will be celebrating metal in all its diversity. Come along and explore metals that have memory, a jet engine turbine blade made from a single crystal, and discuss ethical gold with researcher Peter Oakley in the Materials Library. Cóilín Ó Dubhghaill will be in the Library talking about his research, specialising in friction stirred mokume gane metals.
See some 3D printed metal objects, have a go at raising copper into a bowl shape, make your very own spoon from copper, and create your own wire sculpture with artist Helaina Sharpley in the MakeSpace. Learn the ancient technique of pewter casting with cuttlefish bone. Watch scientist Andres Tretiakov set fire to metals, creating sparks to see the beautiful colours metals emit. Listen to and watch live performances from a UCL homegrown brass band named Dat Bass, who will also be talking about the sound of metal. There will also be the chance to taste metals…
Its free.
No need to book, just drop in from 1pm.
Doors close at 5pm and space is limited.
