OpenAFM invites you to “ODD Summer 2016 - two months to save the planet!”

OpenAFM invites Institute of Making members to participate in a series of events this summer taking place in Geneva, London and China, working on a project to build a low cost open source Atomic Force Microscope for schools (previously known as LEGO2NANO!), enabling young people to explore the world at nano scale.

The project is part of a wider summer program called ODD Summer 2016 – Two months to help save the planet - a series of linked events working with United Nation agencies to build open source hardware solutions to the UN sustainable development goals.

We are putting together a UCL team to focus on expanding work done in previous years to build a low cost open source Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), for pollution studies by Chinese school students. See openafm.com for previous year's projects and developments.

There are three parts to the summer activities to choose from.
1) One week summer school in Geneva (4-10 July)
2) A month of hacking in London (with the potential to carry out some work in collaboration with a UN agency in Geneva) 11 July - 13 August
3) Two weeks in China with time both at the prestigious Tsinghua University in Beijing, and in Shenzhen, the making capital of the world. 14 - 27 August

We are expecting to be able to cover all the costs involved but will confirm once we have received all applications.  Option 2 would require 1 day a week minimum in London with the potential to spend time at a UN affiliated lab in Switzerland.  Participants funded for 1) or 3) would be expected to contribute 1 day week minimum to option 2) in London.

No previous experience or knowledge of atomic force microscopy is needed, although experience in making and programming is important.
