Paid Internships at the Institute of Making

The Institute of Making runs a paid internship programme for UCL students and staff. These roles have a fixed 12-month term, starting in March 2023 and finishing in March of the following year.

Besides providing a casual job which will be flexible and understanding about your other responsibilities at UCL, being an intern at the Institute of Making offers the opportunity to learn a range of new making skills.

Our interns are an important part of our membership community, and provide valued support in our workshop tool training programmes and our events work.

This year we have three types of internship available; Digital Tools internships, Analogue Tools internships, and Events internships. There are separate application forms and job descriptions for each type of internship. If you like the sound of more than one internship type, please apply for your preferred internship type and tick a box in the application form to be considered for other types too (so please do not submit multiple forms!). Note: you will only be offered one internship.

All interns need to work at least two to three shifts per month and sign up to work on at least one large-scale public open day event in June or October, which usually takes place on the weekend. Interns also need to attend three mandatory paid training days.

We rely on all of our interns:

  • To uphold the Institute of Making ethos

  • To be kind and helpful

  • To contribute to a safe and inclusive work environment

Interns will be trained in specific areas of work.

As Digital Tools Intern, you will be trained to teach members how to use the 3D Printers and Laser Cutters, and do basic maintenance for these tools. You will also help to deliver our large-scale public events once or twice a year.
