Maker in Residence – Linda Brothwell
Tuesday 22 November 2022 10:00am - 4:00pm
Inducted members can join Linda anytime during the residency week.
Artist and maker Linda Brothwell will be using the Institute of Making as her studio and creating a bespoke hammer for Institute of Making, co-designed for a special purpose to be determined during the week! Linda will be creating the hammer from scratch during her time at Institute of Making: from turning the wooden handle to creating, hardening and tempering the metal hammer head.
Members can drop in throughout the week to see how Linda is getting on and ask questions about her practice, and even join in for some on the spot making. Using one of the many pre-loved hammers in the workshop of Institute of Making, members can adapt the handle to make it fit you and your proposed use. As handles are made to a ‘standard’ size which often doesn’t suit the use, adapting the hammer would take the form of shortening the handle using a saw, rasp and files; adapting the grip to marry up with your intended function better; learning twine whipping techniques, bright coloured texture dipping, as well as scribed markings. For fun or function, there will be many materials and techniques for you to play, personalise and adapt with Linda on hand to guide and encourage you.
How to join in with Linda during the week:
- Join the ballot for an opportunity to book a making session with Linda (the Made-to-Measure Starter Sessions, see individual listings here)
- Simply drop in and find Linda for a chat any time between 11am-1pm or 2-5pm during uor opening hours!
Linda Brothwell is a British visual artist. Her multi disciplinary practice casts her as a maker of objects, tools and publicly sited interventions. She considers what it means to make something by hand that takes ‘care’ as its core, to not only make the thing, but to make the thing that makes the thing, to spend months or years immersed in the techniques, the materials and the stories of a place.
Linda is a graduate of the Royal College of Art and founder of The Tool Appreciation Society. In addition to her artistic practice, she is Trust-wide Curriculum Lead for Art & Design and Technology for The David Ross Education Trust.
